BROKERS COMMENTS
This 60 ft Mylne designed gaff yawl was launched in 2006 as a 12 Metre –She has the lines of her 1909 sister ship JAVOTTE but a modern construction plan engineered by Ian Nicolson. In 2010 KATE was converted to yawl rig, giving her a powerful mizzen, following the tradition from the early 1900s when sailing with the large cutter rig became just a bit too much hard work. The effect has immeasurably enhanced handling and improved speed in almost all conditions. Most recently in the single handed race at the Antigua Classic Race Week KATE came a convincing first, ahead of the boat she wants to beat most, LONE FOX - hard to beat - and the overall winner of the Regatta.
CONSTRUCTION
Frames are laminated mahogany as is the centreline structure. Planking, screwed and glued to the frames is 35 mm Oregon pine; a 2 mm veneer of Okoume covers the interior planking. Deck beams are laminated Oregon pine. Decks are two layers of 10 mm Bruynzeel ply with a laid deck of Oregon pine of 4mm glued over. The keel of 11.5 tonnes is of lead secured with 18 bronze keel bolts.

- Spars are Sitka spruce, made hollow
- Rigging is by Philip Walwyn using Sta-Lok and Hasselfors fittings
- 200 sq metres of sail; jib, staysail, mainsail, topsail & mizzen plus a spinnaker

OWNER’S COMMENTS
When we spent time, money and emotion building \"KATE\" we were not thinking about anything except bringing the job to a finish. Since her launch an extraordinary amount of interest has been shown in the boat. Unwittingly we have touched a nerve or perhaps struck a cord.
People seem to love classic boats and for six months in the Caribbean wherever we have sailed every camera has been pointed our way and \"KATE” has had endless positive comment This has been very rewarding for all involved in making \"KATE\" sail and as the owner I am both grateful and somewhat humbled by the attention given to us.
To top it all the July 2008 issues of both Classic Boat magazine from the UK and Wooden Boat from the US show \"KATE\" on their covers, with extensive articles inside.

HISTORY
To an original design by Alfred Mylne KATE has been built by Philip Walwyn and his small team of wood workers in St Kitts; taking 4 years and over 18,000 man hours of work. She was modelled on JAVOTTE, the successful Mylne 12 Metre of 1908 - subsequently to be destroyed by fire in a Swedish yard in 1964.
Copies of Mylne’s drawings and calculations were used – displacement and ballast ratios are as designed. Walwyn’s goal was a beautiful and long lasting structure with construction engineered by Ian Nicholson in wood, epoxy, bronze fastened throughout and glass sheathed using 2 layers of 300gsm biaxial. Epoxy, additives and glass cloth are from SP Systems and coatings are by Awlgrip.
ACCOMMODATION
With experience gained building boats up to 23 metres on deck engineered in wood / epoxy, KATE’s interior and furniture are designed to be both functional and add strength - again aiming for a particularly stiff structure.
KATE is a symphony in simplicity, again evident in the yacht’s interior – a modern adaptation of a vintage race boat below decks, the result is both functional and in good taste.
The deck heads and bulkheads are painted white and the cabin sole boards are an Oak laminate. The cabin joinery and trim is mahogany (recycled from antique furniture).
The interior layout is traditional with two quarter berths aft, chart table to starboard and galley to port. The main saloon is made up of settee berths and pilot berths port & starboard. Moving forward in the boat there is a marine WC on the starboard side and sink and vanity unit to port. There is a double cabin forward of the mast. The anchor locker and stowage is forward of a watertight bulkhead.
REGATTA CHARTER
Sail her with your own crew or join us.
We are 60 feet on deck, 12 metres on the waterline and almost 24 metres from bowsprit tip to main boom end. We carry 250 square metres of sail to windward in mainsail, 3 headsails and a jack yard topsail. Spinnakers are set down wind.
Accommodation is rudimentary and for regatta charter most of the party will sleep ashore or in “mother ships”.
After 20,000 man hours in the build here is a chance to sail a fully powered up gaff yawl in the Caribbean, New England and Europe.
