58 ft Sparkman & Stephens Ketch 1971

ANTHOS

BROKERS COMMENTS

This Sparkman & Stephens Ketch was built in 1971 by Cantiere Carlini di Rimini, a yard famous for their impeccable workmanship. She has always been under Italian ownership, and remained with her 3rd owner since 1984 - this boat is beautifully original, and even slight alterations have been referred to the Sparkman & Stephens office in New York.

If you combine the S&S office at the top of its game with one of the best wooden boat yards in Italy, then ANTHOS is the result … it would be true to say they do not make them like this anymore.

ANTHOS was designed for a large family to cruise in total comfort – with 8/9 proper berths in four separate cabins, not to mention the separate crew accommodation forward with its own heads and another two berths.

Forget gentlemen’s clubs … think more 1970s Hotel Splendido: this yacht’s interior is teak throughout with elegant touches in terms of upholstery and fittings – it does leave you wondering why modern yacht interiors often look like they are trying too hard.

Signor Frers commented, and not so long ago, that ANTHOS was possibly the most beautiful yacht in Portofino that afternoon … was he hinting that he may well have been working at the offices of S&S in New York at the time the boat was drawn, or did he have a point?

ANTHOS almost defines what a family cruising boat should look like and sail like. The Olin Stephens' factor is overwhelming, both in terms of beauty and balance.

She can comfortably sleep 11!

DECK LAYOUT

ANTHOS has a traditional layout on deck to be expected from a yacht from the 1960s and early 1970s. The teak laid deck is in excellent condition (replaced 2004). All deck joinery including hatches, covering boards and toe-rail are in teak, as is the entire trunk cabin and the cockpit coamings.

The cockpit is deep and well protected, with seating at deck level and large lockers that descend deep below the side decks. In the spirit of this yacht there is a cockpit table that stows on the compass binnacle, but when erected can seat 8 for lunch! There is a large lazarette on the aft deck behind the cockpit and tender outboard bracket on the pushpit. Primary and secondary winches are mounted on teak, outboard of the cockpit coamings. The companionway at the forward end of the cockpit leads below to the owner’s cabin. There are six B&G repeaters on the trunk cabin bulkhead facing the helmsman.

The trunk cabin ends aft of the main mast – the main accommodation is accessed by a main companionway at the forward end of the trunk cabin and there are four dorade type vents and another deck hatch in the trunk cabin roof. There is a small deck hatch, aft of the main mast and ventilating the second guest cabin. Forward of the main mast the foredeck has a further two deck hatches, the first on e giving access to the main forward guest cabin, the second larger one accessing the crew cabin and sail stowage area. There are halyard winches at the base of the mast, spinnaker pole and jokey pole stowed to starboard, held firm by elegant teak deck fittings. Forward of the inner forestay is an anchor windlass and deck wash for anchor.

ACCOMMODATION

11 berths in 5 separate cabins (including crew cabin). The cabin joinery is superb and in teak, as is the cabin sole. The deck head is painted white but the laminated deck beams are varnished. The hull planking on the interior of the yacht and frames are varnished.

The main accommodation of the yacht can be entered via a companionway at the forward end of the cockpit, via the owner’s cabin or through a main companionway, forward and in the coach roof.

The owner’s cabin has two generous single berths port and starboard, with the stairs in between – there is storage under the berths (drawers) and shelves, outboard of each berth. An extremely tasteful white and gold-patterned upholstery has been chosen for seating and berths throughout the yacht. There is an ensuite toilet/heads with shower, bidet and washbasin – because of its location at the entrance to the aft cabin can also be used as a day head, without disturbing the owner’s cabin. The WC/heads is a manual Blakes with bronze fittings.

Moving forward in the boat, opposite the main companionway steps, to port, is a very spacious gallery, well designed, forming a V-shape, with teak and stainless work surfaces, large 4-burner hob, grill and oven, top loading freezer and separate fridge. The gallery is well aft and with its V-shaped design would be workable in a seaway.

The yacht’s engine is under the cabin sole opposite this area – there are two stainless fuel tanks, situated port and starboard, outboard of the motor.

The main saloon is divided in to a V-shaped settee, to starboard, with a permanent pilot berth outboard, a very large drop-leaf dining table (to sit 8 – 10), on the port side is a navigation/chart table, with two permanent seats, the yacht’s distribution / breaker panel (see Navigation/Electronics section). There are four very large drawers built into the chart table and the quality of the teak joinery in this area is impressive. There are four opening ports along the side of the trunk cabin, in the saloon area, with attractive curtains matching the interior upholstery. There is also a series of cabin lights and reading lights.

Leaving the main saloon, there is a guest cabin on the starboard side of the yacht with two single bunks, again all constructed in varnished teak – there is storage space outboard of the bunks, and again the hull plankings and the yacht’s timbers are on show. Immediately opposite this cabin is a guest bathroom with another manual Blake WC, shower, bidet and wash basin.

The next cabin is surprising as the interior volume of ANTHOS allows for a large guest cabin, with two single berths to starboard and an identical pair to port. The feel of this cabin is the same as the rest of the yacht, completed in immaculate varnished teak. There is a hatch in the deck head, reading and main lighting. The forward bulkhead in this cabin hides an entrance to the crew accommodation, neatly behind a mirror.

ANTHOS has a remarkable layout, as the forepeak is still large enough for a crew cabin which boasts a heads, wash basin and shower, to identical berths, port and starboard and sail stowage in the bow.
