BROKER'S COMMENTS

It has been said that Philip Rhodes designs were moderate in all respects except for their beauty and performance - INFANTA is a perfect example of this with strongly curving sheer and with overhangs that are not extreme. She is more striking to the eye than many vessels that appear to try a lot harder.

Under current ownership INFANTA won hearts at the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta taking the \'Je Ne Sais Quoi’ Award (2008) and later in the year, at the Transat Classique Lagasse she took the Trophee de l’elegance - a vessel that has not purely good looks, INFANTA finished a very creditable 7th in the race across the Atlantic and is now proving the perfect cruising boat among the islands. Most recently she took 1st prize in the Vintage class at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and came second in the Concours d’Elegance.

INFANTA is perhaps the perfect size; more than able to cross oceans (and be the belle of the ball when she arrives!) but also perfectly manageable for a crew of two in the Solent.

History

Launched in 1947 only a little is known about INFANTA prior to the 1980s, when she was acquired in a very dilapidated state; The then new owner undertaking major work including new keel bolts, floors, reframing with laminated frames, refastening, rebuilding the forward coach-roof, new hull ceiling and cabin sole.

In 1991 she came into the joint ownership of a family with the Pease Classic Charter Company Inc. in the USA during which time further refurbishment added to the status of this fine yacht. She was sailed and raced enthusiastically out of Chatham often with a crew of youngsters many of whom still hold her in fond memory. In 2005 family circumstances ended the arrangement with Pease Boat Yard.

The present owners, acquiring INFANTA in 2006, shipped her to the UK and undertook the extensive refit and renewal throughout the winter of 2007 / 08. This distinctive, navy blue hulled, stylish American racing yawl has been sailed with great pride under the British Classic Yacht Club Commodore’s burgee.

Among the original photographs of her launch in 1947 was a more recent letter to the then owners from one Bill Hudgins. The current owners traced this back to Edgartown in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts and Bill turned out to be the son of Houlder Hudgins who had INFANTA built originally; Bill appearing in the launch photos as a small boy. This new historic contact lay behind the inspiration to sail INFANTA to the Carribean in 2008, where she competed in the St Maarten and Antigua Classic Regattas. In June 2009 she sailed north to New York, through the city into Long Island Sound. Having been been the flagship at the India Horbor Yacht Club, Greenwich, Connecticut when Houlder Hudgins was Commodore in 1953, she was given a great reception on her return and Bill Hudgins reunited with INFANTA for the first time in many decades. En route to Martha’s Vineyard INFANTA visited Newport RI and Bill Hudgins, now 72, sailed aboard her from his home town and the Edgartown Yacht Club. In August 2009, INFANTA returned to the UK via Halifax Nova Scotia and Vigo in Spain.

Race honours and prizes include:
1993: Best of Sail Restoration Award: Museum of Yachting, Newport, RI
1993: First Place: Sails around the Cape (new course record)
1993: First Place Class “G”: Nantucket - Hyannis Figawi Race
Past Winner: Newport Classic Yacht Regatta
2000: First Place: Nantucket - Hyannis Figawi Race
2000: Best of Racing Class: Nantucket - Hyannis Figawi Race
2001: First Place: Nantucket - Hyannis Figawi Race
2008: ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’ Award - British Classic Yacht Club Regatta
2008: Transat Classique Lagasse - Trophee de l’elegance
2009: St Maarten Classic Regatta - 1st in class
2009: Antigua Classic Week - 1st in her vintage class
2009: Taittinger Regatta - 5th in class
2009: NHS Cowes Regatta – 1st overall

Infanta is MCA coded Category 2 for charter and attained full ISAF compliance to compete in Le Transat Classique.
