John Alden 45 ft Ketch 1939
DELFINO
BROKERS COMMENTS
DELFINO is pure Alden, a husky and capable ketch; graceful and fast enough but comfortable at sea. Her deck layout and interior, originally well thought out is now magnificently restored. A spacious cockpit and well proportioned and expansive dog house give way to a light, traditional and cosy interior.
There is a shortage of well restored yachts of this size that can be cruised extensively as well as exhibited at regattas and they only seem to emerge from one family’s love affair with a vessel that to others might seem over indulgent or extravagant.
John Alden’s designs are known for their beauty as well as their ability offshore and recently awarded prizes for DELFINO’s restoration acknowledge that her condition is hard to fault but it must surely be her potential in the open sea that truly excites………

HISTORY
DELFINO was originally commissioned by Cesare Pagnini, the last Governor of Trieste. After WWII she served as a gentleman’s yacht to the British Major General Sir Terence Airey, Commander and Military Governor of the Anglo-American Zone. Then she was given to the Yachting Club “Circolo Adriaco” of Trieste where she served as the Club’s sail boat in the 1950s and 60s. She was then somewhat neglected for the next 3 decades until the de Vargas family rescued and restored her before she passed to the current owner.
The full restoration of DELFINO took place over some years up to 2006 and benefited from the expertise of the Cantiere Alto Adriatico under the guidance of naval architect Carlo Ciarelli, as well as Faggioni’s interior design.
After her Launch she cruised Croatia in 2006. After a check up at Alto Adriatico she proved herself in a testing 2007 season, including a tour from Trieste to Naples. From the Savoia Royal Yacht Club she made for the Argentario Classic Week. As for racing she has competed with SIRIUS, CHOLITA and BLUE PETER and proudly won against the French team of Golden Brown so she’s well known and can hold her own on the Mediterranean circuit. Later she cruised with her previous owner along the French Riviera from Monaco to St. Tropez, exciting much interest among spectators. In July 2009 she cruised from Rome to her new home in Alicante and is looking forward for new adventures.
Delfino has won a number of “best restoration” awards including Premio Accademia Navale di Livorno in May 2007 and the “Spirit of Tradition” award for the best restoration at the Barcelona Edition 2006
