Brooke and Co 35 ft TS Motor Yacht 1924

KATHLEEN

BROKERS COMMENTS

Formerly GUILLEMOT, this magnificent motor yacht was bought as a project and in honour of the present owner’s mother; provider of funds for this superb restoration, renamed KATHLEEN. With more to restore than could really be handled by one person her owner enlisted the International Boatbuilding Training College at Lowestoft. While such an arrangement extended the time to complete her, the great advantage has been an extremely high level of thorough and painstaking workmanship, combined with great attention to detail, use of the best possible materials and at a very affordable cost. The end result is a stunning vessel above and below the waterline - and fitted out pretty well regardless of expense. All the modern comforts and equipment one would expect today have been incorporated into her beautiful traditional accommodation without spoiling the unique ambience that only a vessel of this age can have. We could not think of a more characterful craft to transit the French canals en route to the Mediterranean.Meanwhile she comes with a residential London berth licence near Canary Wharf.

CONSTRUCTION

Brookes, renowned for vessels of this type, built her of the best materials of the day. Her carvel hull is of 7/8ths finished pitch pine planking and gunwales copper fastened over American elm timber frames 1 ¼ x 1 inch 6 inches apart. The keel, hog, stem, apron, floors and deck beams were constructed of English oak. In the restoration pretty well everything above the sheer strake had to be replaced but remarkably the hull was found to be in good condition, albeit requiring some part replacement of the pitch pine planking. The deck was relaid with a 22mm plywood structural deck over a laminated Douglas fir support structure and with caulked teak planking over. The wheelhouse and aft cabin superstructure are of teak. The rudder blade and stock are of steel.

ACCOMMODATION AND DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT

The accommodation can sleep 5 in 2 cabins. Entering the wheelhouse by sliding door from the lower side deck reveals an imposing helm and seating to port with access steps down to the owner’s cabin aft and main open plan cabin for’ard.

The aft cabin is both snug and generous with double berth and 4 drawers to starboard and a beautifully finished mahogany storage sideboard console with ample drawers etc to port. The whole is well lit with 2 large and 2 small opening brass ports and 2 x electric reading lights. There is an opening hatch with access to the after deck.

Forward through the wheel house steps down - and double doors open to reveal a vast open plan saloon. This has a wonderful ambience thanks to liberal use of varnished mahogany furniture and deck beams contrasting with the white deckhead and side strips, lit overall by butterfly hatch skylights and the six original bronze ports or by electric light and or (4) oil lamps by night.

Immediately to port is the galley, well appointed with Smev 4 burner gas hob and oven, stainless steel hot and cold water sink and top cover, work surfaces and ample storage around.

A semi low level bulkhead partitions the galley from the main seating area comprising a U shaped settee for 4 or more and table with storage below and bookshelves between the opening ports above. The upholstery is of scotch guarded fire retardant memory foam. The settee pulls out to make a double berth. Another table to seat 8 is stowed when not in use.

Forward a full size doorway opens to the heads compartment with Vacu flush automatic WC, wash basin, shower with tray and automatic pump and generous stowage in the fore cabin.

Moving back through the saloon reveals to starboard; a magnificent mahogany sideboard with ample drawer and locker space including wine rack, with bookshelves above and outboard. There is an infill for a single berth over the countertop. Aft is the chart table with full size fridge below and seating, again with ample stowage under.
