Alfred Mylne 46 ft Yawl 1927
BELLE POULE
BROKERS COMMENTS
This is an opportunity for someone eager and able to restore a classic yawl to her former beauty. Gannon and Benjamin of Vineyard Haven acquired BELLE POULE, this classic 46 ft Alfred Mylne yawl of 1927 to save her from the breakers yard. Indeed she was about to be broken up by the very shipyard that had stored her indoors for a dozen years as she had become irrelevant to that shipyard’s major expansion program.
Thus stored for many years this yawl with her beautiful lines is well worth saving, a very attractive small yacht but which needs a lot of work to have her sailing again. Still owned by Gannon and Benjamin; the following options are suggested to a potential owner wanting to have her restored.
1. Joint project; Gannon & Benjamin would consider a partnership; subject to negotiation.
2. DIY project; Gannon & Benjamin willing to lease space reasonably to accommodate her.
3. Take away.
It would certainly be an exciting project to bring this boat back to life and the opportunity to ask Gannon and Benjamin to inject their unique blend of craftsmanship and soul is almost irresistible.
MECHANICAL AND TANKAGE
She has an operating Perkins 4 -108 which reputedly had a complete rebuild just before being laid up (inside storage) around 1998. The boat needs a complete systems overhaul. She has water and fuel tanks but not much else.
CONSTRUCTION
The original build was of mahogany topside planking and pitch pine planking below the waterline onto sawn and steamed oak frames; copper riveted on the steamed frames. Sheer strakes are teak. Her original teak deck has been laid over with ply.
The boat is complete but needs major repairs to her bottom. Rusting iron floors have caused deterioration to frame ends - both sawn and steam bent - everywhere in the bilge. A boat builder would probably recommend removing six or seven planks each side and reframing the lower parts. The keel timber is badly checked and should be replaced and the stern post should be renewed at the same time. A new rudder will be needed.
On deck, she has a recent ply, epoxy Dynel deck over the original teak; very professionally done, clean and neat. All joinery is teak
ACCOMMODATION ASPECTS
Some of her original interior is intact - mahogany paneled settee fronts and mahogany cabinetry. There is a galley stove and Blake WC.
RIG AND SPARS
The main mast is original - a beautiful round spruce section in need of refinishing. All tangs and spreader hardware are the original galvanized steel. The mizzen is a replacement - solid Douglas fir. A proper restoration would require a new mizzen.
