Herreshoff 59 ft New York 40 Bermudan Cutter 1916
ROWDY
BROKERS COMMENTS
The New York Yacht Club’s intention was for a yacht that could cruise comfortably with a small crew – with racing almost a secondary consideration. The New York 50s and 70s – even then were deemed too expensive to run but they wanted something larger than the NY 30, noting that it is of course the waterline length that defined these marques. Herreschoff’s genius created a yacht so tough and seaworthy the class was to win two Bermuda Races in short order – enough to earn the class its soubriquet “The Fighting Forties”.
ROWDY’s authenticity is impressive and her condition hard to fault. While under her current owner this yacht has indeed dominated her class at classic regattas. It is well worth noting however that her sister RUGOSA in 2001 cruised 26,000 miles to attend the Americas Cup Jubilee. The Wizard of Bristol thus delivered exactly what the Club had wanted, moreover demonstrating the total versatility of her design – one of very few as capable from any era.

HISTORY
Comprehensively restored, ROWDY is one of only five remaining examples of the New York 40. The class concept makes as much good sense now as it did in 1916; fast, seaworthy, and spacious both on deck and below.
Born just one year before the United States entered WW I, the first twelve of the class including ROWDY raced hard before such sailing came to a temporary halt. They were to be joined later by two more; RUGOSA and MARILEE and judging by how cruiser racing yacht designs were to develop, these were well ahead of their time.
Her former owner Holland Duell a lawyer and Congressman, who had fought with distinction on the Great War, was to race ROWDY in Long Island Sound to the end of his sailing career. Subsequently owned by a series of lawyers she was domiciled on the Great Lakes before moving far west to California in houseboat mode, subsequently to be rescued by Chris Madsen and restored.
Come the 2000 Millenium, while in California Graham Walker had heard of the yacht having been restored and determined to see her. “Blown away” by her scale and beauty, he was to buy her and notwithstanding the work already done, rendered her race fit with a Marconi rig more in line with Herreshoff’s own design of 1927. These and other changes equipped her well for a serious second racing career with a 3rd in her first race followed by an early win – the first of many in a notable series of race successes.
