G L Watson Spey Class 40 ft Motor Sailer 1965

SPEY BEAM

BROKERS COMMENTS

SPEY BEAM was built in 1965 and was the last 40 foot Spey class motor sailer of the original design by G L Watson & Co of Glasgow. She has had an extensive refit and has enjoyed almost continuous use. She can sleep 7 people in comfort with 2 heads and a shower. The very economical Kelvin diesel engine consumes only ½ a gallon per hour at cruising speed of 8 knots through the water and range thus of up to 1,600 miles on engine alone, increased therefore if motor sailing.

It would be easy for a yacht of this style and these dimensions to seem clumsy, yet the designer has succeeded in creating a very handsome vessel as much at home in the wilder waters of the Scottish West Coast as she could be in a French canal or the Med – with an elegance redolent of the best of her era.

HISTORY

From her original launching SPEY BEAM voyaged extensively, mainly in Scottish as well as Norwegian waters and apparently also to the Med via the French canals until her current, only her second owner bought her more than 35 years ago for the enjoyment of himself and his family to this day

CONSTRUCTION

Round bilge form and well raked slightly rounded stem cruiser stern of single thickness carvel 1 ½ inch larch planking below the WL and mahogany above on 2 ½ inch sided grown oak frames, 6 inch moulded at keel, 4 ½ inch at bilge and 3 ½ inch at deck spaced at 15 inch centres. Her gunwale is 7 x 2 inch and bilge stringer 5 x 2 inch. Longitudinal framing, keel, hog, stem, sternpost and deadwoods are of oak. The keel has an external ballast section of c 2 ¼ tons. The main decks and over cabin trunks are 1 ½ inch thick Burma teak planking, caulked – and beaded underside. The wheelhouse has been replaced; sides and top of ply on teak framing.

ACCOMMODATION AND DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT

Access to the wheelhouse is from the deck either side. The helm position is to port with single settee berths with cream water resistant cushions either side in the saloon area abaft with drop leaf table between. Four hatches in the saloon floor give good access to the engine bay

Steps down lead to the aft cabin. This has 2 berths with ample drawer stowage furnished in Honduras mahogany with sapele veneers and its own head compartment with Simpson Lawrence manual bronze WC and hand basin.

Forward up to the wheelhouse through the saloon and down the companionway offset to starboard leads to the Formica lined galley to port with Talisman 112 B oven and 4 hobs, fridge and sink and opposite a further head with Simpson Lawrence original WC and shower with new stainless steel tray.

The fore cabin has V berths with ample stowage below and an additional drop down Pulman berth above and to port. It is lit by 4 ports, 2 of which open, a deck head and 2 reading lights
