Erik Salander 34 ft Sloop 1959

SALANA

BROKERS COMMENTS

SALANA is an interesting design from the board of Erik Salander, famous in Scandinavia and elsewhere for designing serious racing yachts for sporting enthusiasts – mostly in the first half of the 20th Century. Well educated in marine architecture he created some remarkable designs and was prolific in the Square Metre classes both on his own and in collaboration with other noted designers. His structures were considered to be very efficient and noted for making good speed yet leaving little wake.

For her owner SALANA was pretty well love at first sight and having undertaken the works to restore her has had the benefit of real pleasure and enjoyment - not to mention the evident pleasure of his crew ! She is a truly delightful small yacht.

HISTORY

The yacht comes with the original plan (No 293) signed by Eric Salander as well as her original 1st registration by the Royal Swedish Sailing Club, incidentally bearing the Swedish royal crest, having apparently been owned by the Swedish Royal Family from 1959 to 1971.

RESTORATION

The boat was given a complete restoration over three years and re launched in Sep 2009. Around 80% of the oak frames were replaced with new; of laminated Iroko. The mahogany hull planking was in perfect condition, as well as the wooden hollow mast and boom. A new teak deck was laid over 18 mm marine ply sub deck treated with epoxy. The rudder was restored and epoxy treated plus a new shaft. Much of the interior furniture and fittings were simply refurbished but some changes included a new mahogany chart table and the basic galley.

The restoration was undertaken on Syros in the Cyclades west of Mykonos where there is an ongoing tradition of wooden boatbuilding. The work was done by a young shipwright who had studied his profession for three years in Denmark and who with his team has established a very high reputation in the local market as well as in the greater wooden boat community of Greece.

The best of materials and techniques have been used, including the West System epoxy for bonding and fairing, Hempel paints and varnish for the interior and Epifanes varnish for the exterior. The mahogany of the coach roof and cockpit has been treated with 3 hands of Epoxy prior to varnishing.
