BROKER'S COMMENTS

Designed by Jack Laurent Giles and intended for the dual role of cruiser racer, SHELMALIER’s construction by Berthon in 1964 was both durable and light weight for her day.

She has been well looked after by her current owners, who have focussed not only on what can be seen but no less importantly on the detail that in other hands might have been ignored. Structurally and cosmetically impressive therefore SHELMALIER is a real class act – with much of her original detail also intact. She carries all of her designer’s characteristic trademarks of elegant efficiency and fully restored this fine classic yacht is a credit to the genre.

History

SHELMALIER designed by Jack Laurent Giles designs was built by Berthon in 1964 - in that year apparently the largest yacht to be built on the South Coast of Britain. Her first owner Sir Ian Lloyd was to enjoy her for decades both in UK waters and later in the Mediterranean. In 1992 her current owners bought her in the South of France; tired and well worn, determined to restore her faithfully to as near original as feasible.

Owners comments

As with all classic yachts, you do not choose them – they choose you! We were entirely sure that SHELMALIER would become part of our sailing family as soon as we saw her. We knew that she would require work in order to put her back into good, reliable sailing condition and of course this was very much the case.

We consciously chose to carry out a series of nautical makeovers, sailing the yacht between her forays to the Shipyard! It has been a great challenge as well as a joy to restore the yacht not just to reliable sailing condition, but to that she was in when first launched in 1964. This involved a lot of research to enable the shipyard to replace parts with similar – in many cases this involved remaking the original article from scratch -hard work and not cheap – but immensely rewarding in terms of maintaining the integrity and character of SHELMALIER.

Owning the yacht however has been about so much more than the restoration. We own her as a syndicate and she has been an indispensable part of summer holidays for our families, where she has been a watery apartment, responsive and powerful sailing yacht, a talking point in any port that she enters and a focus from which we have all enjoyed the sea.

Recently unfortunately due to work commitments we have only holidayed on her occasionally but can confirm that she sails beautifully. We have sourced a full set of original Laurent Giles designs and would be willing to pass these on to the new owner of SHELMALIER.
