John Alden’s schooner designs were influential in generating interest in offshore sailing; their strength and short ended hulls offering security and an easy motion. His yachts nonetheless exhibited the same refined good looks and graceful proportions combined with the sea keeping qualities so admired in his schooner designs. IRONDEQUOIT II is a powerful, easily driven yacht and fast passage maker. She has flush decks forward and a small house aft, with a comfortable cockpit well aft. In recent years she has done well in the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, Régates Royales in Cannes, Les Voiles de St Tropez, Vele d'Epoca di Imperia, and Porto Rotondo. In her current ownership she has once again proven herself as a superb family cruiser – gifted as she is with Alden combination of graceful good looks, easy handling and good sea keeping.

History

The 61 ft IRONDEQUOIT II, John Alden’s design 713 was built by George Lawley to the order of Thomas H Shephard a noted Eastern YC yachtsman, resident in Marblehead and launched in 1940. He and his family raced her successfully until she was sold to a Chicagoan, renamed SYNERGY and subsequently ESBRO VI; the mayor of Chicago among those who sailed her. She was then bought by Dick Sage, who took her back to Long Island via the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. He was to race her on the East Coast, Florida and Bermuda before laying her up at Green Point.

It was there that businessman Jim Rice; searching for a wooden yacht with a decent heritage, found her in the early 80s. He, with his wife’s support determined to restore the boat – and naming her ID, had her towed to Rives Potts’ Pilots Point Marina, where shipwright Hans Zimmer worked for several months replacing frames, floors and working on the deck and superstructure. She was substantially re equipped throughout and newly rigged. The end result according to Jim “was quite worth the effort. ID is beautiful. She turns heads wherever she goes and is a nice sailing boat as well “

She has subsequently featured prominently on the American and Caribbean classic circuits and more recently brought to Europe.
