Laurent Giles Sangermani 63 ft Ketch 1965 - Sold

Jack Laurent Giles is probably best remembered for his pioneering work in the field of light displacement yachts and ocean racers, as well as his achievements with motor sailing yachts, noted for performing well under sail. Indeed with the attention he paid to developing a sailing hull with a more powerful auxiliary engine he effectively achieved the ideal cruising yacht – and into which category SECONDA SANTA LUCIA fits admirably. In terms of style it would seem Laurent Giles designs evoke something almost effortless – and with a subtlety that is frankly immensely appealing to a connoisseur.

If Laurent Giles is the inspiration; he met his match in Cesare Sangermani, who in 1974 expressed the view “I am not capable of making boats only for money, like those who manufacture bicycles or refrigerators. I build boats with my heart. I dream of them at night. I stroke them. I touch them up at night like a poet does his verse. To me every boat is like a work of art. It can’t leave my shipyard until it is perfect.”

Restoration in 2013 has left SECONDA SANTA LUCIA very hard to fault; either structurally or cosmetically. She also has fine crew accommodation albeit she can be run and sailed easily without.

Before constructing SECONDA SANTA LUCIA, Cantieri Sangermani had already build for the same owner, Ernesto Piletti, a passionate fisherman and sea lover, the SANTA LUCIA (hull number 49) a 16 metre motor sailor with which he had discovered a very productive fishing area near Livorno, to which area he gave the name Santa Lucia.

In 1964, looking for more comfort and space, Mr.Pilleti asks Sangermani to build the SECONDA SANTA LUCIA in order to continue exploring and fishing. This time he chose a project from the English designer Jack Laurent Giles; a bigger boat with a canoe shaped stern, tall bow and two powerful engines that would make fishing and exploring possible in rougher sea conditions. The yacht was built with the best materials and systems available in Europe at that time and on 7th July 1965 she was launched.

Bought by her current owner in 2012 he had her completely refitted during 2012 and 2013 by her original builder’s yard the Cantieri Sangermani in Lavagna. The main tasks and equipment items fitted (some already detailed in appropriate sections above) were:

Hull structure and equipment
- Hull completely checked and several damaged wooden planks replaced
- Internal structure thoroughly revised; wood and metal structural damaged parts replaced
- Rudder taken down, revised and all damaged wooden and metallic parts replaced
- Keel revised and damaged areas fixed
- The first keel bolt replaced and the central ones checked
- Anchor locker rebuilt and reinforced with GRP inside and two stainless steel beams outside
- All through hulls replaced by new
- Lazarrette rebuilt for new systems; steering, water maker, Air con, washing machine, etc
- Old deck removed
- 2 x New 10 mm layers of marine composite sub deck laid
- New 15 mm teak planking deck laid over

Rigging
