BROKER'S COMMENTS

One of the finest and most striking examples of the later days of British wooden motor yacht design and construction, TAMBURA was originally commissioned by a leading scientist who had the hull extensively tank tested for stability and seakindliness by the UK National Physical Laboratory. Great care was also taken with sound proofing, and TAMBURA is one of the quietest motor yachts we have experienced. Always powered by a pair of trusty, economic, slow-revving Gardners, and professionally maintained by her three owners with regular refits, TAMBURA exudes an air of elegance combined with purposefulness that is almost unique in our opinion.

HISTORY

BERTHON BOAT COMPANY Yard No. 974

TAMBURA's design was commissioned in 1974 by radio, high-definition television and, in particular, gas detection pioneer, Joshua "Joe" Sieger, OBE, of Poole-based J & S Sieger Ltd (now part of Honeywell Analytics). Launched in early 1975 as the research vessel yacht ENVIRONIST, she replaced Sieger's earlier Reg Freeman-designed 52 ft MFV-type research yacht LAELIA. Prior to build commencing, extensive tank testing was undertaken at the National Physical Laboratory Ship Division, Teddington, to ensure she would be an economical and comfortable sea boat - and a stable platform for testing the company's gas detection equipment which had diverse marine applications from the smallest of pleasure yachts to ocean going tankers, oil production platforms and nuclear submarines. Great care was also taken with sound proofing. ENVIRONIST was a guest vessel at the 1977 Silver Jubilee Spithead Royal Navy Fleet Review.

During her second ownership from c1985 as BALANDRA by British-based Australian industrialist and ocean racer Sir Robert Crichton-Brown, she cruised regularly in Northern European and Mediterranean waters, always returning to winter in the UK with regular refits and managed by a professional crew. The flying bridge was added under Crichton-Brown's ownership.

Under her third ownership as TAMBURA since 2003, this striking and practical yacht has continued to be professionally run and maintained, mostly Mediterranean-based, but with refits by Cockwells in Cornwall. TAMBURA has been operated for pleasure, as mother ship to a classic regatta yacht, and for charter.
