HISTORY
Bristol Channel pilot cutters were developed to sail efficiently in one of the most difficult seaways in the world with its strong tides, narrow channels and short steep waves - as well as the blue waters of the Western Approaches.
They were to escort or ‘pilot’ large merchant ships safely into ports up the Bristol Channel. Sailing west as far as they could to spot the largest and most lucrative ships heading for England, they would race to get their pilot onboard and secure their fee.
They would spend weeks at sea in all conditions waiting for work thus they not only had to be faster than their competitors but also capable of withstanding all the storms the Atlantic Ocean could throw at them.
These cutters evolved with the fastest and strongest being replicated and improved upon until by the early 1900s steam took over……………

BROKERS COMMENTS
Conceived as a replica of the pilot cutter PEGGY, built in 1904 by Rowles of Pill, POLLY AGATHA has all the charm of a classic Edwardian cutter but with a luxurious modern interior and equipped with modern technology. Her ample deck space - and accommodation designed by Cockwells fit her for a variety of roles including charter and sea school use but her finish and detail befits that of a vintage yacht – and places her a long way from her work boat roots. She has 10 berths including a luxuriously appointed master cabin aft with an en-suite head and shower. Classic style combined with modern luxury and the latest technology…... “This new pilot cutter is a sheer delight to sail and deceptively fast to boot” Yachting World August 2008. POLLY AGATHA is of such note that she has been accepted onto the National Register of Historic Ships.
CONSTRUCTION
For the most part, the structural integrity of hull and deck is replicated from the original boat PEGGY with the same construction techniques used. The exceptions are the use of bronze fastenings instead of iron, and in the construction of the deck. This improved even on the strength, stiffness and durability of the original by having two layers of marine ply sheathed in epoxy and glass, overlaid with ½ inch by 3 inch teak planking. The keel is opepe and frames are oak with larch planking, all fastened with bronze screws.
