There is, of course, her impeccable and superb Sparkman & Stephens/ Paul E. Luke design and build provenance, and undoubted beauty. But MADRIGAL offers a rare extra dimension: the opportunity to purchase a classic cruiser/ racer yawl at that magic 45-50 ft size range that has been much loved and well cared for by the same family since she was first launched almost 65 years ago. In the past MADRIGAL rubbed shoulders with some of the 20th Century’s most famous yachts in the Newport Bermuda Race and was a regular race winner on Long Island Sound. More recently she has cruised and raced in Maine and been looked after professionally, indoors by winter, in the capable hands of Brooklin Boatyard. MADRIGAL is an American dream.

MADRIGAL was designed by Sparkman & Stephens for American Yacht Club member Albert B. Boardman II - descended from a highly successful Rye, New York family of lawyers - and built by the renowned Paul E. Luke shipyard at East Boothbay, Maine. She was launched in June 1958 and remains in the same family today.

Conceived as a fast racer/ cruiser, she has excelled in both roles. MADRIGAL is a big, comfortable, well balanced boat, sea kindly and competitive in all breezes.

Her racing career began in 1962 with that year's Newport to Bermuda race, finishing a respectable 9th in Class B on corrected time, ahead of the likes of COTTON BLOSSOM IV (William Fife's HALLOWE'EN), BACCARAT, PALAWAN, DRUMBEAT, STORMY WEATHER, CAPER, ARGYLL, GERMANIA V, ROYONO and CARIBEE.

MADRIGAL continued to compete through the 1960s, 70s and 80s in club and offshore races, winning many trophies and accolades while still functioning as the deeply loved family cruiser. In 1983 for the famous Off Soundings Club's 50th anniversary, MADRIGAL's crew presented to the Club the “Madrigal Trophy” consisting of a half-model and plaque on a specialised mahogany backing. This award was accepted due to her constant winnings in both the fall and spring series of races.

Later in her life MADRIGAL moved to Maine and became a favorite in the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta Classic Boat series, sailing in the first regatta in 1985 and continuing until 2006 when she retired from racing.

MADRIGAL has been well maintained by her owner, along with modern upgrades in the very capable hands of Brooklin Boat Yard where she has been stored inside every year out of the weather.
