BROKER'S COMMENTS

Almost a total rebuild and restoration and thoroughly modern systems make SWANILDA a very usable classic. Indeed, following her 2010-2012 reconstruction her design and condition now should allow ocean passages as well as summer cruises and classic races. A recent topsides repaint and mast and spars refinishing at Elephant Boatyard leaves this very English lady looking very smart. Given the treatment she has received, SWANILDA is undoubtedly very reasonably priced.

History

CAMPER & NICHOLSONS DESIGN No. A197
BERTHON BOAT COMPANY YARD No. 907

SWANILDA is from the board of Charles Arthur Nicholson whose designs favoured full bows & fine run; a shape with comfortable seagoing characteristics – and this yacht is no exception. Built by Berthon in 1960 for Horace Skeet Broom and named after the central character in the ballet Coppelia, she was built for racing. Indeed she raced in RORC and Royal Southern events with varying degrees of success until rating rule changes made her outdated and she went into retirement as a fast passage cruiser from 1965.

In 1967 Broom sold her to Henry Williams who in 1969 shared her with Jonathan Trafford who both then sold her on to Arthur Wilson who kept her until 1986 when she was sold to Nigel Dean. She was sold again and substantially refitted. Rowan Yacht Services of Hoo undertook the work over three years; also fitting the Yanmar 57 hp engine and new tankage. Her first trip thereafter was to the 2004 Classic Boat Regatta and she was based in Cowes for some years thereafter.

In recent ownership SWANILDA enjoyed another substantial refit at the Elephant boat yard in Bursledon – indeed a virtual rebuild with the original mahogany planking below the waterline replaced with iroko, and a completely new totally in keeping interior. In 2012 she crossed the Atlantic both ways.
