BROKER'S COMMENTS

The beautiful and competitive International One Design is Bjarne Aas’s most famous creation. While famed also for his success with Metre boat designs, he was of course inhibited by the Rule. For the International however he could cut loose to design a boat not only fast but incredibly seaworthy. MARGUERITE ex STARLIGHT has moreover been cleverly optimised to perform well enough to win her class under IRC and CIM handicaps; making her a very economical option for a sailor looking to race at Classic regattas with a small crew – and at modest cost.

History

MARGUERITE was one of the last pine planked constructions by the Bjarne Aas yard at Frederikstad, Norway. By 1953 she was Lloyds registered in Ipswich as STARLIGHT. She then raced in the Solent with about 20 other IODs. There is a painting of the fleet in the Royal Corinthian Yacht club and some monochrome photos of her at Beken; all from the 1960s. She moved with the fleet to the Clyde in the 70s where she belonged to Brian Young, proprietor of Silvers boatyard at Rosneath. Two boats were owned and maintained by their yard, this one was his daughter’s which they had re decked in teak. In the Royal Northern Yacht club there are numerous class photographs & half models.

In 2004 she returned south to Beaulieu for family use and had an extensive renovation programme including the fitting of the diesel inboard to facilitate mooring. This was carried out as was her annual maintenance by the Elephant boatyard, renowned for their expertise with 6 metre boats.

In 2008 she was bought by the present owner, rechristened MARGUERITE and then based in the Channel Islands with a view to family sailing, local racing and an entree into the classic regatta circuit. From 2008 to 2010 she had a major renovation; then to compete with some success in the 2010 & 2011 seasons detailed below.

The IOD class continues to sail in Bermuda, the US and in the UK the class is at St Mawes. MARGUERITE has been adapted to race in club handicap racing under IRC with 3 successive reductions in rating following optimisation. Now at 0.873 she races boat for boat with modern yachts & for family or shorthanded sailing handles with ease thanks to her furling jib and all halyards & controls led aft to the cockpit. She has been inspected and officially measured for both IRC & CIM and accepted into the classic class (ref P 197 Panerai Classic Yacht Guide).

In 2010 she was transported by road to the Cannes & St Tropez Classic Regattas launching and recovering with her own equipment. She finished 3rd in class in St Tropez. In 2011 she competed in the British Classic Yacht Club Cowes week, winning her class and coming 2nd overall in the week.
