BROKER'S COMMENTS

Her pilot cutter pedigree - hull lines evolved by Ed Burnett and John Raymond-Barker from one of the most famous of them, Bill Tillman’s ocean and high latitudes voyaging MISCHIEF - deep keel, low freeboard, substantial gaff cutter rig, and past and present provenance, make MORWENNA a fast, comfortable and capable boat. From her 2009 launching at the Underfall Yard, Bristol, MORWENNA has been a busy charter boat in both British and Mediterranean waters, and a veteran of two Fastnet Races. After a recent period of inactivity, her present, experienced marine professional owner has refitted MORWENNA and returned the 'honest finish' shine to her undoubted charms. She’s ready for either more of the same, or family cruising in the most authentic of style - or a bit of both. This is a rare opportunity.

HISTORY

MORWENNA is named after St Morwenna, a Welsh Saint who crossed over the Bristol Channel to Cornwall in the 5th Century and lived her life in a little Hermitage, now called Morwenstow, overlooking the Atlantic on the North Cornish Coast south of Hartland Point; on a good day she could see her native Wales. The Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters that worked the Western Approaches would pass Morwenstow on their way to meet the incoming ships.

MORWENNA's lines result from the deeply informed research undertaken by boatbuilder John Raymond-Barker and yacht designer Ed Burnett in creating an as near as possible 2007 replica (no drawings existed) of the 1906 Thomas Baker of Cardiff designed and built Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter MISCHIEF, which became internationally famous through her ownership from 1954 to 1968 by mountaineer, explorer and voyager H.W. "Bill" Tilman.

As the MISCHIEF replica was being launched in November 2007, Raymond-Barker had already laid the keel of MORWENNA, to MISCHIEF's lines but with a different deck layout and interior. After MORWENNA's launching in March 2009 she has been a successful charter boat, firstly on the south coast of England - taking part in the Fastnet Race in 2009 and 2011 - and then on Mallorca's ruggedly beautiful west coast.
