BROKER'S COMMENTS

A keenly priced period piece, MUSKETEER OF STUTTON is a fine and untouched example of the good job the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Rule did in encouraging sensible offshore yachts with a very long shelf life beyond their initial competitive years. For almost 50 of her 60 years MUSKETEER has roamed the Atlantic and Mediterranean as a bona fide, well-mannered cruiser, while introducing countless novices to the joys of that. Much of her ability for such voyages stems from a snug rig and a thoroughly practical accommodation layout developed by the Camper & Nicholsons design team from bitter experience. But MUSKETEER hasn’t entirely abandoned her competitive ways: she was a class winner at 2017's 30th Anniversary Antigua Classic Regatta.

HISTORY

CAMPER & NICHOLSONS YARD NO. 886
MUSKETEER OF STUTTON was designed (principally by Peter Nicholson) and built by Camper and Nicholsons' Southampton yard over the winter of 1962/63. She was launched in the spring of 1963 for Peter (later Sir Peter) Green, then Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, and featured in that May's Yachting World magazine. Originally built as a yawl, in 1964 she was converted to a sloop by adding 3 feet to the main mast and removing the mizzen. She raced competitively in the UK during the 1960s, winning the RORC points championship at least once and taking part in two Fastnet Races.

MUSKETEER's racing career came to an end in June 1970 when she was sold to Nigel Pattison of Itchenor Sailing Club who sailed her to the West Indies (for his honeymoon) and back over a 2 year period, returning in 1973. Following a short period with W.M. Tubby of Guernsey, ownership transferred to Royal Cruising Club member Henry S. Williams of Plymouth, a former flag officer of the Royal Western Yacht Club of England and a leading light in that club's involvement in the Single Handed Transatlantic Race and the Double-handed Round Britain Race. In 1980 MUSKETEER was purchased by fellow club member and serious blue waters cruiser Jonathan Trafford who restored her yawl rig and took her on a cruise to the Caribbean and the USA 1981-83. On her return she remained that family’s cruising yacht until she was sold in 1987 to Kevin and Jan Townsend who cruising many happy sailing miles on her: much of Europe from Spain’s Atlantic coast, France, Ireland, Scotland to Norway and the Baltic, including Russia and Estonia. She also took part in some of the Tall Ship races: 1991 (Ireland), 1993 (Norway and Denmark) and in 1996 (Rostock, St. Petersburg and Turku, Finland). Through the 2000s the Townsends offered Ocean Yacht Master courses and lived on board for a period.

Her present owners purchased MUSKETEER from the Townsends in 2007 since when she's been maintained by Poole-based shipwright Lee Woodford, and sailed with friends and family, and in sailing adventures for novices. She completed another Atlantic circuit 2016-2017 (the last leg on a ship), taking in Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta 2017: winning Classics Class D and coming 3rd in the Concours for privately maintained Classic Division yachts.
