BROKER'S COMMENTS

AMELIE ROSE benefits from the accumulated experience of being the 7th pilot cutter traditionally built by legendary Cornwall-based boatbuilder, sailor and educator Luke Powell, and from fourteen seasons of constant summer use as a successful charter vessel on Northern Europe’s Atlantic seaboard. Using such a vessel as intended – and keeping it usable – is a major ingredient in a wooden boat remaining sweet, aired, efficient, and long lasting; AMELIE ROSE is a fine example of this. She is of course also infused with the grace, charm and purposefulness of the Scilly pilot cutters of old, and offers simple, stress free sailing in great comfort aboard a vessel that can't fail to become a love affair - probably at first sight.

OWNER'S COMMENTS

As well as being stunning to look at, AMELIE ROSE, the seventh of Luke Powell’s famous replica Scilly Isles Pilot Cutters, shares her lines with EZRA and AGNES, both of which have also proved to be successful and sturdy vessels. She is a handy size, large enough to accommodate a healthy crew whilst remaining easy for just two people to handle. She has been rigorously maintained and benefits from an exhaustive specification and inventory making her perfect for anyone seeking a fine example of these sought-after vessels. Between July 2023 and July 2024 AMELIE ROSE enjoyed an extensive cosmetic refit, above and below decks, and is ready for the sea.

HISTORY

UK NATIONAL HISTORIC SHIPS REGISTER NO. 2575

Since her launch in 2009, AMELIE ROSE worked continually as a charter and sail training vessel until 2023. She has become a familiar and much welcomed sight in harbours from the Solent to Brittany and has introduced hundreds to the experience of sailing aboard a traditional vessel. With over 25,000 miles under her keel, she has proved to be a fast passage maker and in 2015 won the St Mawes Pilot Cutter Review, proving her mettle against her kith and kin. In 2012 she achieved fame when she starred in the ITV series “The Hungry Sailors”, carrying Dick Strawbridge and his son James from Fowey to Tower Bridge in the heart of London.

Key benefits of her charter life have been a continual and thorough maintenance regime and an ongoing programme of improvements fitting her perfectly to her role and making her the one of the best examples of her type available at this time.

LUKE POWELL - WORKING SAIL

There came a point in Luke Powell’s long lifetime in boats when he realised that the wooden ones, and the skills to build them, were disappearing. He decided to do something about it the only way he knew - hands-on. Since moving to Cornwall from Kent in the 1990s, the result of this labour of love is a fleet of beautifully, traditionally built pilot cutters: EVE, LIZZIE MAY, AGNES, HESPER, EZRA, TALLULAH, AMELIE ROSE, FREYA, and PELLEW, in which Luke has the time and the task to pass-on his accumulated knowledge to a future generation.

In preserving skills in this way, the wonderful by-product has been to create a desire for experiencing and owning these vessels. As Luke says: “There’s something quite profound about being on something that is not of our time... When you sail on a boat like this, it’s a time machine; it takes you back to another place; it’s not just an object of conveyance. Whereas a modern boat is like a car - just a factory made object that does no more than take you from A to B - this [AMELIE ROSE and her like] takes you through time and space.”

Those who buy in to this philosophy tend to stick with it and so the opportunities to own one of Luke Powell’s beautiful creations are very rare indeed. AMELIE ROSE offers an opportunity not to be missed.
