Carlini 50 ft Bermudan Yawl 1965

It seems that Cantiere Navale Carlini were favoured by Olin and Rod Stephens for the build of S&S designs for their clients from the 1950s through 1970s, and although MIETTE has an S&S design plaque fitted in her cockpit – with no official design number – it would be incorrect to attribute her lines to the famous New York design house. MIETTE has that look and sailing qualities along with fine Carlini pedigree, nonetheless, which has meant her current owner has kept her for more than 50 years now… She is a Mediterranean darling who has been loved and sailed consistently each season - proving absolutely fit for purpose - and improving the view in so many beautiful anchorages through so many summers! One might ask – how many modern yachts will be kept by one owner for 50 years?

MIETTE’s drawings were prepared for Carlini by a naval architect Raffaello Serafini. The design influence seems to represent a stretched version of Einar and Sven Hansen’s 1959 Fastnet Race winner ANITRA, Sparkman & Stephens design no. 1358, built by A/B Neglinge-Varvet, Saltsjöbaden, Sweden. Einar Hansen liked the design so much that in 1963 he replaced ANITRA with the scaled up 74 ft CAPRICIA, now owned by the Italian Navy. At least two further boats were built to design no. 1358: CHINA CLIPPER, by Wing On Shing Shipyard, Hong Kong in 1963, and LEOPARD NORMAND Normand by the Durand of La Rochelle, France, in 1965.

MIETTE’s design, and – according to her present owner – build, was commissioned (his name is on the plans) by an English-based aficionado of beautiful yachts; the owner from the late 1940s through late 1960s of some rather famous boats. But for some reason he never took delivery.

From the end of the Second World war, Jacques “Jack” E. Salem, Cheshire-based scion of a successful Ottoman Salonica (now Greek Thessaloniki) textiles trading family, and a member of the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Little Ship Club, owned the 92 ft Stow & Son 1913 ketch HARBINGER; and the Fifes FLICA II (1939 Jack Laurent Giles designed 12-Metre), EILEAN (1937 Bermudan Ketch), and the 1936 Bermudan Yawl LATIFA. Jack Salem was LATIFA’s second owner; the first to fit her with an engine.

According to Lloyd’s Register of Yachts, Salem still owned LATIFA at the time of MIETTE’s launch as AITA in 1965, and around this time his address had changed from Bonis Hall, Prestbury, Cheshire, to Vaud Canton, Switzerland.

The handed-down story is that the Englishman who had commissioned MIETTE didn’t take her because he bought a Fife instead – but as far as we can tell he already had one: a special one. Whatever the reason, under her first name, AITA, she was sailed round Italy to Santa Margherita Ligure in 1966 and sold in 1968 to a northern Italian industrialist, who then sold her (having sailed her for only a few hours) in 1970 to the present owner.

Now as MIETTE, she sailed to Fiumicino, near Rome, which remained her home port for a decade, refitted there by the d'Este shipyard to her present configuration with a shorter main boom, a taller mizzen, and the chart table turned to the present forward facing position.

MIETTE arrived in Croatia in 1982 and has sailed across the Adriatic to her builders’ yard every other year for, in her owner’s words, “the best possible maintenance”.

In effect, this beautiful yawl has only ever had one real owner who, now in his very active late 90s feels it’s time to find her a new lover.
